THE SYMPOSIUM

IS ORGANIZED BY THE HELLENIC CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL CLUB FOR UNESCO SUPPORTED BY THE HELLENIC NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR UNESCO UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE I.O.A.

The Annual World Cultural Heritage Youth Symposium is being held on the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. The Symposium is a contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals promoting “Education 2030” focused on SDG 4.7 as well as SDG17. It is also supported by the United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) and the UNESCO Chair in Intercultural Policy for an Active Citizenship and Solidarity – University of Macedonia, Greece..  The official language of the Symposium is English.

THE AIM

The symposium aims to bring together students and teachers from all over the world in order to raise cultural awareness, develop mutual respect and contribute to the creation of a new generation of world citizens that feel united in diversity and are willing to shape a sustainable future for everyone. This is being achieved through knowledge and experience exchange, interaction and collaboration on a common goal related to the world cultural heritage.

RAISING AWARENESS IN A DIGITAL AGE

The World Cultural Heritage Youth Symposium 2023 focuses on “Raising Awareness Ιn a Digital Age” and invites students and teachers to engage in the topic by participating into various activities during the Symposium in collaboration with other delegations.

THE OBJECTIVES

  • Students will be given the opportunity to present a part of the tangible or intangible World Cultural Heritage, expose their ideas and turn cultural diversity into a power for peace, security, and development for all.
  • Students will interact with the other delegations to understand different cultures and acknowledge the importance of the World Cultural Heritage on global, regional, and national level.
  • Teachers will be given a leading role in shaping the future generation through collaborating with colleagues from all over the world.
  • To equip students with knowledge and skills and empower them to become ambassadors of the World Cultural Heritage.

Participants will also have the opportunity to come in contact with the ancient Greek culture and civilization.

PARTICIPANTS

In the Symposium are welcome to participate teachers and students older than 12 years old of schools, universities and/or educational or cultural organizations and associations from all around the world. Minor students should be accompanied by at least 1 adult. All participants will receive a participation certificate signed by the organizers.

The UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet)

The UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) connects more than 12,000 schools in 182 countries around a common goal to build peace in the minds of children and young people.

In 2023, the Network will celebrate its 70th anniversary and the commitment of millions of students, teachers and principals to promote fundamental rights and human dignity, gender equality, social progress, freedom, justice and democracy, respect for diversity and international solidarity – UNESCO’s core values!

During the World Cultural Heritage Youth Symposium 2023, ASPnet students, teachers and National Coordinators will meet to share and learn from each other about cultural heritage

A special session on ASP net’s History of ideas will be presented by Ms Julie Saito, International Coordinator (UNESCO), and a World Café for teachers on “How digital tools support transformative learning regarding culture ” will be organized in collaboration with the Hellenic National ASPnet Coordinator, Mrs Vera Dilari.

THE DATES: 26-30 April 2023

The duration of the Symposium is 5 days. The Opening Ceremony is on the 26th April at 18:30. Οn the 27th April all delegations will depart to Ancient Olympia and they will return to Athens on the 30th April 2023.

REGISTRATION

UNTIL 23 DECEMBER 2022

The teacher (representative of the delegation) has to fill the participation form with the required information. Since the number of participants is limited, the order of priority shall be established by the date the participation form is sent to the organizers.

The deadline for the submission of the participation form is the 23rd December 2022. However, since the number of participants is limited, should the participants have reached the total number of 300 (80 for participants of the Hellenic schools) earlier than the 23rd December 2022, no further applications will be accepted.

THE OPENING CEREMONY

The Opening Ceremony of the Symposium 2023 is hosted by Pierce – The American College of Greece. The ceremony will take place at Pierce Theater, which is the venue of choice for exceptional and large-scale performances. The theater is equipped with exquisite soundproof panels and multiple surround sound monitors. For the needs of the Ceremony special equipment such as a large videowall, robotic stage lights, visual effect machines etc. will be added. The Opening Ceremony is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 26 April 2023 at 18.30 and its duration will be 100 min (est.). According to the Program, a variety of musical and dance acts performed by the students will take place during the Opening Ceremony.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation in Athens:

On the 26th April delegations will be accommodated at Titania Hotel: http://www.titania.gr

Accommodation in Olympia:

Delegations will be accommodated either at the International Olympic Academy or at the Olympic Village Hotel (www.olympicvillagehotel.com ) or at Amalias Hotel (https://www.amaliahotels.com/olympia/hotel/ ).

However, the final choice about the accommodation and the rooms of the participants will be made based on organizational criteria and cannot be changed in any way and under any circumstances.

Students are to be accommodated in 2-, 3- or 4-bed rooms and adults (teachers and coordinators) are to be accommodated in 1- or 2-bed rooms.

THE DECLARATION

Before the end of the Symposium the participants will sign a resolution on the protection of the World Cultural Heritage.
The Declaration will condemn any assaults and crimes committed against World Heritage sites and focus on the fight against any attack on cultural diversity.
The outcomes of the Workshops on “Awareness through Education” will also be included in the document and will be forwarded by the organizers along with the declaration to:

  • UNESCO’s Education Sector
  • UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre

THE MEDICAL TEAM

IASO Children’s Hospital will support the World Cultural Heritage Youth Symposium 2023. The medical team of the hospital will be present during the Symposium in the premises of the I.O.A. in Ancient Olympia.

THE COVID-19 PROTOCOL

The Symposium is subjected to the instructions of the Hellenic National Public Health Organization (https://eody.gov.gr/en/novel-coronavirus-covid-19-advice-for-travellers/ ). For the time being (September 2022) teachers and students can participate in the Symposium with either a negative PCR test certificate taken no later than 72 hours before their arrival on the 26th April 2023, or a negative Rapid test certificate taken on the 25th April 2023. However, if the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic changes, this protocol will be updated. In this case all participants will be notified.
